I recently caught up with an old friend (am I old enough now that I can say ‘old friend?’ I don’t know. Weird). Elizabeth was actually my middle school small group leader when she was in high school, and now I’m about to graduate from college and she has a beautiful little family and a successful business. Time flies.
We reconnected because Elizabeth is passionate about living healthily and naturally and uses essential oil products to accomplish that goal for her and her family. I didn’t know much about oils, other than the fact that you can use lemon oil to clean your skin off (or the table and floor if things get crazy) after a little at-home eyebrow waxing session. It honestly seemed like a lot of work, a lot of time and a lot of money to get involved in the whole “oil lifestyle,” so even though I’ve always been interested in learning more, I never really tried.
She reached out to me because I think she may have actually read my mind. And the first thing she explained- which I think is a common misconception and so important to realize- is that you don’t have to spend a thousand dollars and replace every product in your home the day you decide to start using essential oils. I’m starting with some lavender oil to replace the melatonin I take to help me sleep.
That’s it! As a college student, I don’t have the time or money to make a million changes at once, but I can make them little by little. Elizabeth learned about oils in nursing school, when her friend would break out the peppermint oil every time they studied together. She started small too, and has gradually replaced everything from her medicine to cleaning products to makeup with essential oil products.
Elizabeth uses Young Living Essential Oils and loves the community built around the continual learning process of living naturally. That’s another thing she emphasized- you don’t have to be intimidated by all there is to know about oils because you can learn along the way! This is why it’s great to become part of a community instead of buying your oils at Walmart or Target. If you have a question, there are people with answers. If you want to learn more or get more involved, there are people to support you.
Another great thing about Young Living that sets them apart from oils you can buy at any grocery store is you know exactly where your products are coming from. You can even visit the farms where your oils start as seeds to see the whole process for yourself. This is a really awesome feature, especially when using oils around your home with pets or little ones. It’s important to know exactly what’s in your products and how they’re made.
Elizabeth told me about the ThinkDirty app, which is a great place to start if you’re concerned about what’s in the products you’re using in your home and on your body. We put hundreds of chemicals on ourselves before even leaving the house every morning! Small changes can go a long way over time in avoiding exposing yourself to so many toxins and creating an overall healthier home environment.
If you’re interested in starting to create a healthier, more natural lifestyle and learning about how essential oils can help you do that, Elizabeth would love to connect with you through her Facebook group. Anyone is welcome to join and ask questions!
It starts with simply being more conscious about what we put in, on and around our bodies, and there are TONS of ways to make all aspects of our lives and parts of our days a little cleaner and a little healthier. I’m excited to start learning about them!
